Group research into our genre

We watch a lot of different film openings and moved more towards the film openings that were a little bit different to the conventional mainstream film opening. By this is mean that we watched many different film openings that were all filmed in different ways using different methods. we watch the film Ratter, which was one of our main influences for what our idea was based around. we also gain inspiration from the film opening from 127 hours, this was because the film opening was a little different again as it started with screens that split into two and three. We liked these because we thought that we could combine these two ideas as we were influenced most by these, to result in a film opening with the shared ideas. This meant that we were able to gain a better understanding of what we wanted to see for our final piece and what we wanted to see as a final product. We were mainly inspired by Ratter because we liked the way that the story is based on modern day technology and how easy it is for someone to hack into your personal information and smart technology products such as Apple products. We liked the way that the whole film fits the convention of a mainstream film but was filmed using a whole new method. This was filming the whole film through a webcam of a computer, representing the hackers view of the unsuspecting people that he is watching.

What we know about film openings as a group

  • Must include the production company at the start
  • Includes titles in the order, star names, name of film, supporting cast, casting, designers, co producers, editors and director
  • Use of non diegetic music
  • Main actors starred mainly throughout opening
  • An establishing shot of the location
  • A strong narrative
  • Usually starts with an equilibrium
  • Introduction to a key plot
  • Sometimes, key dialogue or narration to the story
  • Establishing shot
  • Normally 1:30- 3:30 minute introduction, to engross audience

From doing this, it will help us when deciding on what to include to make the film look professional. Also we will know what to include such as, the key conventions to a mainstream film. We will look at our target audience and relate back to these key points, so the our genre and film is effective.

Thorax opening includes the right titles and order, and non diegetic music.

Audience Questionnaire Answers Analysed

This helped us with extra planning in our film, as it gave us primary research to look at. It meant it was accurate and good pieces of information to use when planning our film opening.

The type of institution we will be

We wish to be a mainstream institution because we aim to attract a wider audience and stray away from targeting a niche audience. this is because our genre is based around attracting a large number of people rather than a specific group. we wish to be a mainstream institution as it will mean that more people will come and see the film and this will also mean that people will be able to see our film in a mainstream cinema. By looking at other mainstream film openings it will mean that we will be able to see what a successful mainstream film opening looks like. this will also mean that we will have to create a moving institutional logo as this is very common for mainstream films.
We want to be like other mainstream companies, such as Paramount, as they are successful well known companies. To do this, we will make sure our film opening is in the same style as this company would produce. In the way that it looks like a high produced film and is professional.

Audience Questionnaire

This questionnaire is to see what the target audience is expecting from our opening, we feel it is necessary as we want to impress the audience by hitting their expectations.

This will help us when making our own opening because it will help us decide our target audience, this will also allow us to put a certain certificate on the film as well. This means that our script and overall opening will change due to our age group we have chosen because we will want it to be entertaining as well as appropriate. Getting this information will also give us an indication on what to put in our opening so we can differ from other films as we could do something different to what they would expect to make it better, or we could put our own twist on it.

Mindmaps on genres we could choose

This will help us when creating our own opening as we will have ideas about stuff we could do for 3 different genres, this means if we ever change our mind on our ideas, then we will still have a good idea on what to include and talk about.

Constructing our Re-make

Because the film opening of Superbad was a plethora of different colours we has to find a way of filming the footage while putting the bright colours over the footage.

We were able to find a frosted glass wall that we were able to put coloured filters over in post production. This enabled us to look like silhouettes and have the coloured sets at the same time. Because we were able to find a location where we were able to to create our silhouettes naturally, it meant that we didn't have to worry about getting a green screen to enable us to create the silhouette effect.

Another beneficial thing about where we filmed was the ability to use natural light without having the create the light to enable the silhouette effect so it meant that were able to go in, film and leave. This was beneficial for the whole production stage as it meant that the whole process was fast and we ended up with a very successful remake.

Our Remake Film Opening

This helped us when making our own opening as we had to think about it a lot, we had to take several things into consideration that we would most likely have to do with our own opening as well. We had to think about things like sound and the location, we also had to think about timing to make sure it was actually long enough which was quite hard to do. Editing was also very important to us as we had to edit quite a lot of the colour onto it, this meant we spent quite a lot of time on the editing software which allowed us to learn about it.  We added in the original credits as well, which meant we could get an idea of the credits order so it looked more professional, this will help us a lot with our own one as we will now know the order so we can make our own opening a lot more professional. All of the stuff we done made us gain experience which therefore made the task very important as now we can confidently create an opening ourselves without much trouble.

Remake Shotlist

By making a shot list, it made it clear what we needed to include when filming. Although we only have two shots, this is because the film opening doesn't involve any close ups and is a stationary camera throughout. This also made it easier when filming, as it is simple. However, from doing the shot list, it made sure we stuck to what the film opening included and didn't change it too much.

Remake Storyboard

This will help us when making our own film as we will know how to break it down into sections making it easier to change parts to make it better. This will allow us to focus on key features like location and dialogue in our opening as we would only have to think about smaller things.
